Basic Introduction of Treants

Treants (also known as Forest Protectors or Tree Shepherds) are one of the oldest races in the world of Mellus. Treants are extremely wise, slow paced and protective creatures. Treants are believed to be the most long-lived mortal creatures of Mellus and they can live up to a millennium (1000 years). The Treant race is deeply involved with the natural world, specifically the forests that stretch across Mellus. Although known for their patience and wisdom coming with the many years that the Treant race lives for, they are extremely passionate beings and creatures of war when their flocks (the trees) are in danger. Treants are extremely spiritual beings and therefore emotional creatures, which can result in them using their heart instead of their mind when making decisions. Although living creatures of wood, they are not in fact trees although they come from a similar ancestry.

The History of Treants

The Treant race originates from what they call the Forest Lands. The exact location of this place is unknown due to Treants being a verbal race and only passing down their history by word of mouth. Although it is believed by the Treants that all the lands of Mellus were once covered in trees. The first Treants were sprouted from what they call the Mellus Tree which was believed to be the first tree ever created by Nature. Down the road, the original ancestors of the Treant race spoke of strange, non-wooded beings planting a Nexus in their great forests.

The Treants have often kept to themselves and have only been involved when the Forests that they seek to protect were in danger. However, the Treants were the second great race that the Sis'Ralar had met. The Sis’Ralar, Simly and Treants had worked together to protect the lands. Eventually the Treants started to fear the future when the non-wooded beings left and buried the Nexus with great boulders to prevent any from coming to their forest lands. The Treant race had split into two parts, although most of the race had left their forests of old and only a handful remained in the Forest Lands. The Treants had maintained the balance of Nature in these Forest Lands for so long, all of their presence was no longer needed. New forests had sprouted all around Mellus and they sought to find new herds so that the trees of Mellus may always be prosperous and safe.

The Treants were the original Keepers of the Gnarlwood Groves and soon then allowed the Sis’Ralar and Simly to borrow from the tree’s as they provided medicine and were required for spiritual rituals. Eventually the Katarious Empire had found the Gnarlwood Groves and the Treants had fought valiantly with their new found allies which eventually consisted as Elves as well, but were defeated. Many Treants fled the Groves and soon the entire Treant race was scattered. This explains why Treants are of various sizes and shapes. A group of Treants had always stayed with the Sis’Ralar Realm, continuing to be a part of the united brethren founded under Nature. None the less, a bond was created between all the races of the Gnarlwood Groves.

The Culture of Treants

Treants prize the forests of Mellus over everything and everyone, although they have great appreciation for the many parts of Nature. There lives are dedicated to the woodlands. They believe that every tree has a name, spirit and story. Overtime, they have infused their ideas with the Sis’Ralar and have accepted the spiritual beliefs of all things and not only just the forests, although a strong favour remains to the woods. Unlike the Sis’Ralar however, Treants view their roles as Guardians instead of a co-operation with Nature. There is said to be a Treant for every major forest in Mellus. They are certainly one of the most feared sights to see if one comes with axe and fire to their forests. Treants tend to be of the Sis’Ralar Realm, although many are realmless and tend to their own woods in peace.

Treants speak the language of Entish but it is unknown to every other creature, for it is not a clear language and other races do not have the ability to perform the thunderous sounds with their throats. Their language is extremely slow, loud and consists of many noises – it is said that a proper Entish greeting takes 3 days. Treants as well use this language to speak to the trees and communicate with their forests, although many races are skeptical of the Treant communication. Due to having such a long language, they tend to go on and on when speaking in other tongues. Most Treants are able to speak the Sis’Ralar tongue, the Common tongue and Entish. They love to discuss every point of view and are not known to be hasty creatures unless it is of the direst importance. This is why the most elder Treants have the most say among their race and are looked to for the final decision making, for they have the most tree rings (Experience of life) under their belt. The oldest Treant alive to date is currently Ferngornwiseweed Elmsrootpinemoss Greenbeard who is said to be around for 700 years.

There are both males and females of the Treant race. The Treants mating cycle is extremely different then all the other races. The process first starts with the male and female treant planting themselves in the ground. Once they have both expanded their roots from underneath their trunks, they connect their roots which wrap around each other. The very creatures connect themselves physically and spiritually. The male will then send all of his nutrients that he has collected to the female. The process takes an entire day. An entling (also known as Treant Twigs or Seedlings) sprouts from a female Treant after the creatures have mated. After an entire cycle of the four seasons has happened (one year), the Entling will be planted. A Treant tends to mature around the age of 150. Treants cannot breed outside their race.

Physical Characteristics of Treants

Due to the Treants being scattered across Mellus, they are of various shapes and sizes and always represent the Forest they watch. A Treant whom watches over Duskenwood for example would most likely be extremely tall, tougher and have needles for leaves. Treants always are able to blend in with their herds of Trees, so that such large creatures are able to pop out and snatch those who would break the balance of the woods. As well, it is much easier for them to communicate to the trees when they are identical to them.
